Sustainable Ranching

For over 30 years, Seacross Ranch owners and operators Randall Shinn and Mickey Steward have produced the happiest and healthiest, grass-fed Red Angus cows on the native grasses of Montana. They are proactive stewards of the land, focusing on the nutritional quality of their pastures and implementing range management practices that improve biodiversity and wildlife habitat. They won their first Rangeland Management Stewardship Award from the Bureau of Land Management in 1995, one of the first in the industry to do so.

Through holistic herd and land management, the quality of Seacross Ranch beef is unparalleled. Offspring of their heifers are found in many top-tier Red Angus ranches across the country.

The Beef about Beef

There’s a lot of information out there. Eat meat, don’t eat meat. It’s bad for the environment, or wait, are soybeans worse? We know you are berated with contradicting information every day. And you know what? We aren’t here to tell you how to live your life!

All we want you to know is that our cows, our land, and the humans and wildlife who call it home are living the most sustainable, healthiest, happiest life possible. And we know that animals raised on native grasses in our peaceful valley offer the most nutritious, complete protein in the world.

Why Seacross is Different

  • We have focused on nurturing the land since day one. After decades of planting native grasses and plants, our pastures are more diverse and healthy than ever!

  • We are an Audubon-certified Conservation Ranch, which meets rigorous requirements for habitat management, animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and more.

  • We ensure year-round grazing methods of varying intensities, which improve nutrient cycling in the soil, groundwater recharge, plant and species diversity, and weed and pest control.

  • Our animals live their entire lives at our ranch, and when the time comes, their lives are ended at home, snacking on a treat bucket. Even other “grass-fed and humane” companies still transport their cattle for processing, which greatly increases their end of life stress, decreasing the nutritional quality and flavor of the beef. Not us!

  • We protect our creeks and streams on the ranch, improve fish and riparian habitat, and maintain a natural flow regime.

  • Our regenerative and sustainable practices include (1) periods of intense grazing for weed control rather than pesticides, (2) elimination of neonicotinoid pesticides in our alfalfa‐grass hay fields, and (3) the use of clovers and diverse cover crop species inter‐seeded into hay fields instead of chemical fertilizers.

  • We care about the growth of our community, and conduct seminars and classes on sustainable grassland ranching and best practices. We host interns from top university agricultural programs to gain first-hand experience on our ranch.

  • We are ensuring food security through our end-to-end food supply chain, minimizing our carbon footprint and delivering fresh, healthy food directly to the consumer.
